Variant on mark position for column chart
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:16:48 AM »
I am wanting to do a report that compares an organisation's own data with their peer group. The underlying data is categorical. I am constructing the report with:
  • column chart (to show the number of organisations within peer group in each category)
  • mark position (to show own organisation)
For example, there might be 20 organisations categorised into: unsatisfactory (2), satisfactory (10), good (5), excellent (3). The column chart would be have bars of size 2 10 5 3. An organisation that was good would have the 'mark position' line at the good column (column 3).

This is working really well but the line to mark position can be difficult to see. A useful variant would be to have the relevant column a different colour.

For the example, would have a column chart with 4 bars of colour and size:
grey 2, grey 10, black 5, grey 3

I hope this makes sense, Jen

This indeed sounds as a logic addition to the current things you can do with a column chart.
Highlighting the position of one member in a peer group for benchmarking.

Looking through the manual further, this has been implemented for StackedChart (as highlight position). This is exactly what I want for the BarChart.

You can already apply specific colors to each bar, by using the ColorRange parameter.
ColorRange must have the same dimension as the dataset used for creating the bars.

StackedChart() and Pareto() can also be very efficient for what you need.

In order to use the attached .xlsx file, you need to update the addin (xlam only) with  version 03022012 (ddmmaaa) or more recent. Download link
Previous versions do not update stackedcharts with one segment only .
